Background
Tell us about your major at university and your research subjects.
At graduate school I studied algebraic number theory in the mathematics department, quite an abstract theme for research. We would think of special number systems and look for regularity by calculating "class numbers", one of the parameters for just how different a system is from normal systems.
When you were looking for employment, what types of work and industries did you look at? Also tell us why you chose SMK in the end.

I had no experience, but programming interested me, and I thought I'd like to be a system engineer and do work solving different people's problems. So I originally centered my search on companies doing systems integration, but then I came across and liked the concept of working as an SE in the information systems department of a company working in a different field, and I decided to apply for a position at SMK.
The deciding factor was my impression I got during the interviews that there were a lot of nice people at the company. I felt that I would be able to work in a relaxed and supportive environment.
Work
What were your feelings about SMK after you started working here?
Before I joined the company, I had the image of the systems engineer as someone working alone, plodding away at their job. In reality, the individuals in the Computer Systems and Data Processing Dept. do spend a lot of time at their computers working by themselves, but there is also more teamwork than I thought, and it is important. I felt it was necessary to have an awareness while advancing a project as a team, checking up on the fine details of requirements, checking the progress of other team members, and basically communicating effectively.
Tell us about your job.
We do a wide range of work in my department, but I think of my job as being the "go-to guy" when you have a problem with your computer or data. There is a great deal of variety in the tasks I perform. My main job is to come up with ways to make the link between our internal groupware and other systems more convenient. Apart from my role in implementing the technical side of things, I also get requests from other departments, find out what their purpose is and what they want done, and I also create and disseminate the operating rules for new systems.
Tell us about when you experience a feeling of job satisfaction.

I have implemented a new project management tool in the SCI Division, and this has enabled us to interact with the data on the company's internal system. This was the first project I was tasked with as the main person in charge. I was able to do it because I had the support of the senior colleagues around me. But I still had a great feeling of satisfaction being the lead in a variety of jobs, such as communicating with other departments, studying the Web API, the required technology in this case, and being posted to other departments to teach them about the specifications of the system and how to use it. I learned that there were a lot of items to consider throughout a single project. I learned very soon after entering the company that this job is not just about creating a program and releasing it.
Tell us about something that you found difficult at work.
While I think my work is varied and interesting, there are a lot of things to learn as well. For example, I not only have to learn the programming languages that are widely used, I also have to learn the language used for the internal system. Furthermore, in order to make the internal system something truly useful, I need to understand what it is they do in the other departments. There is always something I need to learn, so I have tried to be conscious of being ready to take in new things, even in my private life, so that I can absorb everything I can.
Vision
Describe your dreams and goals.

I believe I have studied a great deal since joining the company, if I say so myself, but I'm still mostly focused on how I can achieve the things that my bosses and seniors ask of me. My most immediate goals are to absorb new knowledge and technology and have more experience, and be able to come up with new proposals myself to make work easier for people around me, and find ways to contribute to the company.
CASUAL QUESTION
What do you do after work or on your days off?

I mostly go out with friends on my days off. We go eat together or go to karaoke to shout out loud. I also go out to play card games with friends that share my interests. If I have no particular plans, I will hang out at home watching movies and playing games, just doing nothing much of anything for a while.
A day in my work life
