Innovation Center

Innovation Center

The Innovation Center, our R&D department, creates new business opportunities.

Its responsibilities go beyond just the development of hardware. It also develops applications, algorithms, and services, using these to find solutions for the issues facing society. Through a combination of in-house development and open-source activities, the Innovation Center operates using revolutionary measures to pioneer the future.

Our Mission

The Innovation Center has the following three pillars of mission.

  1. Create a solutions business that solves problems facing society
  2. Create the key earnings drivers for SMK with unique technology that adds value to the products
  3. Create a new business model that combines the traditional hardware business with software and services, such as algorithms

These will be realized through a combination of in-house development and open innovation that makes use of the most advanced technologies from outside the company.

In the area of IoT, we have been focusing on providing IoT solutions for digital transformation programs across various fields, doing so by developing algorithms adapted for client applications, combined with a variety of sensors, particularly Sub-GHz communication systems.

For the health care area, we have started providing radar based monitoring sensors, as well as increasing our access to the market with our brain disorder screening technology using voice input. We are also attempting to enter the market with our myoelectric sensors, which are able to present visual representations of muscle activity, golf swings, for example.

Innovation Center's Development

Sub-GHz Communication System

We are able to offer an IoT communication system that makes use of a Sub-GHz (920MHz) communication module.
No telecommunications contract is required, and communication specifications can be customized according to the application, making it possible to build systems combined with a variety of sensors.

UWB Type Monitoring Sensor

This is a monitoring system that uses radio wave sensing technology. The reflected radio waves are analyzed, and it enables detection of the position, posture, and respiration of the subject, among other items.
These items of data are then analyzed using our own algorithms to determine whether the subject is in an abnormal state, such as if they have had a fall or are underwater in a bathroom.

Visualization of Muscle Activity

Using a proprietary algorithm, visualization of muscle activity and detection of muscle fatigue are enabled by our myoelectric sensors (Muscle Tracker™).
We anticipate that these algorithms will be able to contribute to improving the efficiency of athletic training, analyze performance in sports such as running or golf, maintain the health of the elderly, and more.

Analysis Technology Using Voice

This technology enables the analysis of brain-related diseases and emotions using a spontaneous speech of approximately 40 seconds. It can analyze the conditions, such as stress, anxiety, and fatigue, that are difficult to quantify, and also perform screening for cognitive decline, where early detection is crucial.
